The Start and End of the Season 2009?

by admin on Jul.20, 2009, under 2009 Season News

Not the start to a season I was looking for, after having invested a lot of money over the winter in getting my car prepped for the 2009 season, and others investing their time.  I didn’t even get to finish the first race. Another car was overtaking me, did not manage it cleanly, hit my car and I was slammed into the concrete pit wall at about 120 mph, on a part of the track with the worst run off area.
Rich was watching from the bottom of the pit wall area, and saw it happen. His immediate reaction, not knowing it was me, was “That’s gonna Hurt!”. Then someone shouted to him it was me and he ran faster than Linford Christie up that pit!
I was not able to move the car and was sat stranded on the track. The race was yellow flagged initially, which meant that the race was still live. The race leaders came around again, and on lookers say they don’t know how they missed me, but thankfully they did. Thankfully I was able to give Rich the thumbs up from the car, so he knew I was fine.
Finally the red flag came out and time to get me out of the car. Due to the impact on the drivers side (lhd), my door would not open. I had marshalls and medics getting in the car from the passenger side, holding my head steady in case of spinal damage. I was fine other than a very painful hand, but procedures had to be followed.
It took the rescue and medical guys and girls 30 mins to cut me out of my car. I came out still in my seat, a weird sensation!
A trip to the medical centre to check out my hand - showed that a chunk of flesh had been slashed, but was still attached.
Off to Nothampton General Hospital for 11 stitches. No broken bones , a few bruises, and a very sore foot. A very lucky end healthwise to what could have been a fatal accident.
I am sure that my decision to have a Hanns device and high sided seat, along with the obligatory harness’ saved the rest of me from any damage.
Thanks to the medics and marshalls for all they did for me, and for those well wishes I have been sent along the way.

What’s next … the car was a write off with very little salvagable on it. So just a question of money now to see whether I can finance another race car.  Watch this space, although I can’t say how big this space will be!!
